As a rule, employment references are objective assessments of your job skills, whereas a personal reference focuses more on your personal qualities. For this reason, some employers ask for a personal letter of recommendation in addition to professional references.
A letter from a character reference is often most effective if it contains personal anecdotes that draw attention to your strengths. Approach someone who has recent knowledge of your personal attributes and abilities, but don't ask family members to serve as references.
Ask the person if she feels she knows you well enough to accurately describe your positive qualities in a letter of recommendation. Naturally, you want to ask someone whom you feel certain will give you a good reference. Talk to the person face-to-face if you can. Tell the person why you value his opinion about your character.
The people you use as references can make a difference, especially when you are trying to build your own credibility. Choose as references individuals who have a background somehow related to the purpose of the letter.
For example, ask a business colleague or former client to write a letter of recommendation when applying for membership in a professional business organization.

Ask the person to provide specific examples of the qualities she feels you exemplify. Offer information that will make writing the letter easier. The person may even ask you to write an initial draft of the letter to give her an idea of what kind of specifics she should include.
Tell the person the deadline for when he must submit the letter of recommendation. Allow him as much time as possible to write the letter -- usually two to four weeks.

I think hers was a control issue because apparently she felt out of control in other areas of.
